Itinerary:
When you take the cable car to the top of Tianmen Mountain, the terminus, you will be treated to a magnificent view. At 4.6 miles long, it is the longest cable car in Asia and takes about 30 minutes from the city. Your first stop is Tianmen Temple, a large religious complex built in the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), although the buildings you see now are more recent. Next, visit the scenic spots that make Tianmen Mountain famous. The vertigo skyway is a narrow walkway made of clear glass that clings to the edge of the mountain. Wear shoe covers to protect the glass and enjoy spectacular views along the steep slopes and surreal karst landscape around Zhangjiajie: your guide will take you to the best photo spots. Down to Tianmen Cave, which is how this mountain gets its name. Tianmen Cave is a huge natural arch that cuts through the hillside like a giant keyhole. It takes about half an hour to climb the 999 steps that lead up to it, depending on your fitness level. From here, you’ll ride a shuttle bus down the winding 99-Bend Road, which curls sinuously around the mountainside, to the cable-car station, and enjoy a late lunch in Zhangjiajie city. Finally, visit the Junsheng Painting Institute and learn about the unique artworks its founder creates using sandstone.
